Under $16

The Curator 2019, A.A. Badenhorst, South Africa white, $14.20, SAQ # 12889126. This strikes me as drier than previous vintages, and I like it even more. A unique blend where you get a little bit of everything: floral, citrus and stone fruits. In fact, there is a great amount of fruit complexity for a wine at this price level, as each sip seemed to morph from mandarin to peach to grapefruit. A perfect inexpensive apéritif to pair with lighter fare. Grape varieties: chenin blanc, chardonnay, viognier. Residual sugar: 1.2 g/L. Serve at: 8 C. Drink now. Foodpairing ideas: apéritif, avocado with Matane shrimp, white fish with fruit salsa.

$16-$20

Malbec 2019, Reserve, Don David, Calchaqui Valley, El Esteco, Argentina red, $17.40, SAQ # 14072671.Classic higher-altitude-grown malbec that shows the more floral and fruity side of the grape. Yes, you still get a bit of the expected gamy note, but on the nose you’ll find more violet and dark florals, as well as that cabernet-style blackberry note. Tannins are soft and cuddly, so no need to carafe this one. Grape variety: malbec. Residual sugar: 3.1 g/L. Serve at: 16 C. Drink now-2022. Food pairing ideas: lamb chops, pork or veal with dark berry compote.
