Christmas Fund: Education is key for family from Kyrgyzstan

Article content

Svetlana and her husband moved to Montreal from their native Kyrgyzstan three years ago seeking a better life for their two kids.

So far, they love it. Education was a major factor in moving here, both for the parents and the kids. All four are enrolled in school as full-time students, with Svetlana and her husband working hard to improve their English with online courses after two years of studying French. Svetlana came here with a love of languages, having already studied French in university back home.

“We chose Montreal because it’s a bilingual city,” she said. “I’ve always been interested in studying English.”

Svetlana’s goal next year is to apply for a bachelor’s degree in economics. Because she studied economics in Kyrgyzstan, she said, she only requires another year of schooling. After that, she’s hoping to find work in the field.

Her kids enjoy Canada too. They go to French school and as a family, they’ve been able to visit Toronto, Ottawa and Quebec City.
